The Surprising Story Behind Hyssop Health

Hyssop Health was created through a series of divine coincidences. Despite its incredible power, Origanum vulgare, or oil of oregano, the miracle herb in each of our products, wasn’t widely used outside of cooking or by experienced herbalists. When we began Hyssop Health, the herb was still relatively unfamiliar to the public, but the original use of oregano goes back to biblical times (the term hyssop originally referred to the oregano plant we use in the formula today). For us, though, Hyssop Health started with a personal journey.
After experiencing acne and the physical and mental tribulations that the skin condition can bring, Deborah Duffey dug deep into the scientific research behind plant medicine, looking for a solution that didn’t come with the side effects of traditional acne medication. Then she discovered the near unbelievable claims of Origanum vulgare — including its naturally antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial properties. Clinical tests revealed something amazing: Origanum vulgare was wildly effective at eliminating P. acne, the very bacteria that causes acne.
On its own, Origanum vulgare is a strong, potent oil. It can cause a burning sensation on the skin and when inhaled, making it unpleasant to use. While it may be tolerable in this way for some skin applications, to truly harness its power in all forms, something needed to change.
This is where our patented NLP technology provided a vital piece of the puzzle. Instead of dispensing oil of oregano in its raw form, by encapsulating the molecules in lipids, a naturally effective and yet tolerable dose could be delivered. With this reformulation, Kara Vita (a Hyssop Health sister company) launched a topical skin care product for acne and other skin conditions.
Once it launched, we saw something intriguing: while we began exploring other ways to harness the power of oregano, our customers were already using the product for so much more than acne. Oil of oregano has strong immune-boosting properties, so we created a product that could be taken orally. The liquid supplement we created is unlike any other available product because it isn’t delivered in a capsule, nor does it need to travel through the stomach and intestines to be absorbed. Instead, thanks to our patented delivery system, sublingual and buccal absorption allowed the herb to be absorbed directly into the lymphatic system. We later created a new formula for nasal use, introducing a way to use oregano for sinus and allergy symptoms, and currently are exploring even more ways to harness the power of oregano.
While our products still smell and taste like the plant it derives from, NLP technology means it can now be ingested or inhaled without overwhelming our senses. The power of oil of oregano is unbelievable: this single herb can ease issues with sinuses, keep the body’s immune system strong, and eliminate the bacteria that causes acne. Further product development is underway to help treat a myriad of challenges in animal healthcare.
